Tree Following: the trail of the lonesome quince

In the blue ridge mountains of virginia
On the trail of the lonesome pine (Harry Carroll 1913).

Except it's not anywhere near a blue ridge mountain (maybe a small hillock) and its not a pine, it's a quincelet. Just the one remains, sadly, solitary.  As the song says: like the mountains I'm blue.
and let's face it, its a dead one.  Yes, all my cherished quinclets have dropped off.  They are no more, they could become part of a dead parrot sketch with the word parrot replaced by quince.  I considered placing it in the a fruit cellar, in a chair and pretending it was still alive, but for one thing I do not own a cellar never mind a fruit one and, also, films tell us this is not a good move.
I am left with the memories of where the quinclets were.

Oh well, there's always next year.

Thanks to Lucy for hosting this meme, more trees can be found here:

  2. That's terrible! We are all struck down in grief. (Seriously - maddening and disappointing though.) But you have the tree. Where there's a quince tree this year there's hope for fruit in the next.

    1. Thanks - there is indeed always next year, though I might threaten it with an axe to concentrate its mind!

  3. Bummer! I'm ignorant of quinces and was hoping to learn. But I'm ignorant of quince trees too, so I'd like to see and hear more of your tree, even if it's quinceless.

    1. Thanks - it's a great tree generally. Really nice foliage, good strong growth and nice blossom. It is worth growing anyway. Apparently some are notoriously slow to fruit.

  4. Such a shame, here's hoping that next year is better.

  5. Sorry to hear this Alison. I had high hopes for your tree this year. I'm guessing mine, which is younger than yours, will drop any day now too. Best luck for next year.

    1. I hope you get one through to fruiting - it's so maddening when they fall off. I shall keep my fingers crossed for you.

  6. That's rather sad. But where there's green there's hope.
I went googling for the word quinclet (or quincelet) and found that Quincelet is a French surname!
All the best with the rest of the tree-following year :)

  8. What a sad story! Here's to next year ...

  9. So sad about your quinces. Here's hoping you get a bumper crop next year. Around here the quinces would have been eaten (or half-eaten) by the squirrels and birds as soon as they changed color. At least yours had a silent, non-violent death....
