Letter to the Garden - October 2026

Dear Garden

It's been a while.  I seem to be saying that a lot at the moment.  I would love to explain why the middle of this year disappeared down a hole somewhere, but there is no explaination.  I can give you no useful reason or excuse.  It just happened.  Maybe I shall blame the heat.....

It is not just that my writing fell down a hole, my actual gardening did as well.  The two are inextricably linked.  No I do not garden so that I write, that is not the process.  When I am gardening I am writing in my head.  So no gardening, no inspiration, no writing.  Anyhoo, I seem to be back in the game so let us celebrate this with a mild, barely audible 'woo hoo'.

How have you been during this period my dear garden?  Not a lot was growing over the summer because of the heatwaves and drought, but you are making up for this now.  I am still discovering the tally of the dead; which is not quite as bad as feared (I think).

I am also on pond-watch.  Despite quite a bit of rain this week, I cannot see any water in the pond.  I hope there is not a leak.

I am also still thinking about the old shed area.  I have been clearing the blackberries away from this area (again), the drought did not make them pause in their tracks.  I think I know what I am going to do, but have not quite reached the definite yet.  Time will tell.

On the plus side: the return of wetter and cooler conditions has made (in the drier spells) great gardening weather.  I have returned to more frequent weeding and I have been planting out some purchases.  I feel like I am back on the gardening horse.  I did not know I had fallen off the gardening horse, but clearly I had.  Maybe not fallen, maybe the saddle had slipped and I was riding off-kilter.  Yes, I think the words off-kilter do describe how things have been.  Not wrong, but not usual.  Off kilter, I like it.  I will not repeat it again, it is getting over done.

Off kilter.

Here's to having my kilter back.

Until next time

Take care and be kind

Your loving Gardener
