Product review: Webb Eco WEV20PSHTB2 20V 50cm (20″) Cordless Long Reach Hedge Trimmer & 20cm Pruner

A few weeks ago I posted my latest 'The Questions' answered by Adam Woolcott who is the gardening expert for Webb Garden Machinery.  I intimated that I would be reviewing one of their products here and, at last, here it is.  

It has taken me a while to post this review as its been an odd year for gardening with all the weather that we have had.  Well that is my excuse and I am sticking to it.  Plus: genuine reason, I do most of my pruning in the early autumn when I know that there is no chance of birds still nesting.  However, I knew I could not wait that long so I very carefully chose what I was going to do.  Quick disclaimer:  I have not paid for the  Webb Eco WEV20PSHTB2 20V 50cm (20″) Cordless Long Reach Hedge Trimmer & 20cm Pruner and I have not been paid to write this review.  My words and opinions are my own.

This is a serious piece of kit.  There is a 50cm hedge trimmer head, a 20cm pruner (mini chain saw) and a pole that can be extended to 299cm long.  It is powered by a 2Ah, 20V battery which is included as well as the charging unit.  I was excited to try it out.

First test was the lilac in the front garden.  This was a few weeks ago after it had just finished flowering.  It needed sorting.

I used the hedge trimmer attachment and it made short work of the lilac and - I want this noting - I did not cut through the wire that was behind it.  I want extra points for this.

Next up I thought what about that annoying bit of hedge that is a remnant of a larger hedge.  One day I will remove it...

Not on this day though, I just reduced it nicely.

Then I needed a test for the pruner.

It may be small, but it is mighty and needs treating with respect.  It also needs some chainsaw oil in order to work and this is not provided.  The heads are powered by a brushless motor, now I confess I have no real idea what that means other than it is motor without a brush.  I understand that brushless motors generally run more efficiently, do not wear out as quickly (because they haven't brushes to wear out) and will give a longer run time to the batteries. 

I wondered what I should try it on and and some thinking I realised what needed doing.  The branches that are encroaching over the driveway were on borrowed time.  I could test the pruner and have it on the extended pole testing both at the same time.

It is nicely balanced, you do get a harness which had I used the extra length of pole I would have definitely needed.  The tool weighs around 5.55 kg which is fairly lightweight, but the balance of the different tool heads has to be considered.  It weighs more at the top than at the bottom.  It doesn't take long to get used to this thankfully.

I should mention here that the extension rod connector is very easy to use.  It works on a screw action and is simple to do.  It also feels very stable.

It was not a huge task to prune the branches, but it is one that needs doing every now and again.

A couple of minutes later and a nice pile of branhes were on the floor.  

A quick tidy up and the driveway was looking a lot better.  It is purposefully not a neat area, but I do like to try and keep the way open with not too many branches reaching out.

I was very pleased with how the tool works.  The different heads are both very useful and effective.  At the time of writing it retails for around £160.  I liked the tools and know I will be continuing to use them.  As I am sitting here writing this I am looking at the front huge and thinking soon......
