Suddenly it is April, really suddenly I think it has crept up on me. The garden is springing forward into Spring.
The weather recently has been warmer during the day, though still quite chilly at night. The Quince Brothers have moved quickly into growth. The leaves are opening and the blossom buds are becoming prominent. It feels like when I last looked only a few days there was no where near this growth, but now the buds are seriously debating when their opening day will be.Of course this does lead to anxiety as it will be a good three weeks before we are safely through the frost zone so I will be watching and hoping that the blossom does not open too soon.
We have also had a run of several days without rain. I read somewhere that it has been the driest March since 1961. After such a wet Winter this is quite a surprise. The ground is getting quite dry but not worryingly so yet. It does make me wonder what kind of Spring and Summer we will have. Will we get the balance of rain and sun that these trees need?
At the moment Quince Minor seems to be further on with bud development than Quince Major, I wonder if this is the year that Minor starts to produce more than one fruit?
Time will tell.
