Tree Following April 2021 - press pause

April finds the Quince Brothers leafing up well and seriously considering blossoming.  My message to the brothers is 'press pause and wait a moment.'
Quince Major is now what I would call a fine looking tree.  The trunk is now several inches in diameter making a young, but not a very young tree.
He is covered in fat plump blossom buds.
Absolutely covered in them.  It is usually around this time of year that I have a little worry that the amazing chartreuse foliage maybe a little too pale.  It always turns out fine so this year I shall admire the colour and move on.
Quince Minor is a few years younger and has trunk of around about 1 or 2 inches in diameter, so is still in the 'very young' category.  Despite this Minor produced his first quince last year so I have high hopes this year.
I don't think I have ever seen so many buds on Minor, he really is looking great this year.
So I am ridiculously hopeful, even by usual over-optimistic standards, that this year will see a bumper crop of quinces.

But I do need them to pause and not have premature blossoming.  We are having below freezing overnight temperatures at the moment and I need the blossoms to stay safe.

So keep everything crossed for me.  The next week could be make or break for this year's quince hopes.

Stay safe and be kind.

  1. I hope they've done okay through these cold nights! I think we're due a couple more frosts before things warm up a bit again.

Anyway, both Major and Minor are looking great :)

  2. Interesting that you have two trees that are slightly different ages so can see the differences as they grow. Fingers crossed for the blossom given the recent weather. xx

  5. Looking good at the moment but obviously fingers crossed for no more frosts. Those winds from the north and east are a bit chilling at the moment.
I do love that word chartreuse...
    All the best :)
