A Leicester Groundhog Day

February 2nd is Groundhog Day.  Now I think I am not alone in the UK in not knowing much about Groundhog Day until with 1993 film of the same name, directed by Harold Ramis and starring Bill Murray. If you have not seen this film and/or do not love it, then quite frankly shame on you; rectify this deficit.
So here I am on February 2nd in Leicester, UK, thinking about ground squirrels looking at their shadows. In reality the only squirrels here are small and grey and looking mainly at the peanuts left out for the birds and any tasty bulbs they can sink their irritating teeth into.

Ok, their teeth are not irritating in general, only when specifically sunk into my bulbs (not a euphemism).

So, did the Leicester squirrel see its shadow today?  Are we due six more weeks of winter?
We did have some sun so I am living in hope that winter will not be too long this year and will not outstay its welcome.

  1. I am absolutely certain that no squirrels saw their shadows and retreated down a hole in Norfolk today, so we can safely pack up our thermals and dust down our barbecues.... once this snow has finished falling. Ahem.
