How we can help support closed nurseries, gardens and gardeners

Never has the word 'unprecedented' been used so much as it is at the moment. We are living in the strangest and darkest times for decades. Public places including gardens are closed, no gatherings of more than two people are allowed and non-essential businesses are closed. We have to do this, we know that we must keep safe from Covid-19 but we also know that millions of people from every part of life have lost their livelihood overnight. I thought I would gather a few things together that will give support to struggling gardeners and horticultural based businesses and also help us who are social distancing and self-isolating feel a bit less distant and isolated.

As I write this their freephone helpline is working as usual and they are provide free and confidential support to anyone who has worked in or is working in the horticultural industry in the UK. End of Month Review December 2019

The last End of Month Review of the decade! How can this be?? It feels like the 2010s have flown by.

Anyhoo, in the garden all is wet. Very wet. It has rained for much of December and to make up for the days it has not rained it has rained all the harder when it has.
The Knot Garden looks like it is still growing well. After having concerns it might have Box-moth it looks like it is growing freshly and cleanly.
In the driveway the mahonia I planted a couple of years ago is growing well but does not appear to have flower buds, which concerns me a little.
and the Cornus officianalis is budding up well. This shrub always flowers early and is a real joy.
The Quince Hedge has some flowers and buds already.
and the hanging basket is not quite living up to its promise yet but I live in hope.
In the back garden the Long Shoot looks quite brown, but you can see the structure given by the sedum heads looking like dark punctuation marks and these make me happy.

Product Review - Gro-Sure Smart Ground Cover

I was asked a few weeks ago if I wanted to trial some Gro-Smart Ground Cover, which is made by Westland. I hesitated a little before agreeing as I am not someone who generally mulches areas of the garden. One look at my weed population will confirm this but I do like to have self-seeders and mulches will keep them controlled as well as the weeds. After some thought I realised that it could be really useful in my vegetable borders where I do want to restrict self-seeders from colonising. A short time later a bag duly arrived.
The first thing I noticed is that it is incredibly light. I braced myself to lift the bag and it was really easy to lift.

Then I set to spreading it out where I am growing beans this year. I am not growing a lot of veg this year but nothing beats the taste of freshly picked french beans.
I spread it so it was a few centimetres thick as the instructions stated. I made sure the bed was well weeded and I also picked a day after we had had quite a lot of rain.…
