Gerddi'r Castell

Oh yes I have been visiting Wales again.  Yes of course I went to Portmeirion and to Plas Brondanw - that my regular readers will expect.  I also spent some time wandering around the garden at Castell Deudraeth.  When we stay at Portmeirion we always go for dinner one night at the Castell; but this time I stayed in the Castell itself which was very exciting.

On the morning I was leaving it was raining.  It had rained considerably the day I arrived as well, but rain did not dampen my visit.

The Castell is medieval in origin, and was reshaped into a manor house developed in the 18th and 19th century.  Clough Williams Ellis bought the Castell in 1925 always intending it to be part of the village.  Sadly Clough did not see this come to fruition in his lifetime and it fell into considerable disrepair.  When I started visiting Portmeirion regularly, the Castell was not much more than a shell.

Thankfully it was restored and is now a fabulous hotel and restaurant. I have wanted to find time to wander around the small the garden for some time.

So I did.
There is the large island bed, with dahlias still flowering and tall palms.
There are niches with benches in, look at the seed pods on this wisteria, it must have been fabulous when in full flower.
Look at this row of camellias, I need to visit again in camellia time as they must look stunning.  They are covered in buds.
I kept walking around, poking my head into the interesting features, generally to find a bench inside.
Niches and benches - perfect to sit with a glass of wine I thought, and just sit and let the world be.
To the back of the garden it is terraced, so I made sure I wandered along and up.  The planting looked relatively young and I imagine that it will grow and develop well to create a backdrop.  The slate mulch is used a lot in the garden; it is a natural resource that is in abundance in the area.
Even in the rain the autumn colours were shining.  I enjoyed my exploration of this garden.  I enjoyed that there was so much sustainable perennial planting and that I know I will want to wander around this garden at different times of the year.  It is not a huge garden and yet even at this time of year I found it full of interest.  I will of course, return.

Take care and be kind.
