Product Review - Gro-Sure Smart Ground Cover

I was asked a few weeks ago if I wanted to trial some Gro-Smart Ground Cover, which is made by Westland. I hesitated a little before agreeing as I am not someone who generally mulches areas of the garden. One look at my weed population will confirm this but I do like to have self-seeders and mulches will keep them controlled as well as the weeds. After some thought I realised that it could be really useful in my vegetable borders where I do want to restrict self-seeders from colonising. A short time later a bag duly arrived.
The first thing I noticed is that it is incredibly light. I braced myself to lift the bag and it was really easy to lift.

Then I set to spreading it out where I am growing beans this year. I am not growing a lot of veg this year but nothing beats the taste of freshly picked french beans.

How we can help support closed nurseries, gardens and gardeners

Never has the word 'unprecedented' been used so much as it is at the moment. We are living in the strangest and darkest times for decades. Public places including gardens are closed, no gatherings of more than two people are allowed and non-essential businesses are closed. We have to do this, we know that we must keep safe from Covid-19 but we also know that millions of people from every part of life have lost their livelihood overnight. I thought I would gather a few things together that will give support to struggling gardeners and horticultural based businesses and also help us who are social distancing and self-isolating feel a bit less distant and isolated.

End of Month Review June 2020

June finds us three months into lockdown and I'd hoped things were starting to ease. I have had a trip out to a nursery and I 'd hoped to be resuming garden visiting soon. The lockdown of Leicester has paused this as where I live is within the restrictions boundary. It is quite dis-spiriting to feel like we are going backwards and also a serious hit for the local economy; but staying safe is what matters most and if this makes the city safer and all of us who live here then it just has to be. Meanwhile the garden carries on regardless and has had a month of scorching hot sun, windy and rainy days. The Knot Garden is in need of a trim and is growing well. The cypress trees are getting quite tall but are still slender and so not outgrowing the area yet. I am keeping an eye on this.
