I broccled

It has taken a long time.  I bought six broccoli plug plants in May last year and planted them into my raised beds.
They grew really well, I was very pleased with them but I knew from long experience that growing broccoli was easy.  I have grown it from seed many times and it grows well.  The tricky bit is actually getting it to broccle without caterpillers eating it or the frost mushing it to nothing.
So I watched it carefully all year.  It grew.  It didn't broccle.
It got to keep winter, frost and snow landed on it.

No broccle.

Then - joy of joys, suddenly a couple of weeks ago the signs of broccling could be seen.
I waited,

and waited,
then I did my first small harvest.  Steamed them carefully - and yes, they were good.

I can say with confidence now - I am a broccler.

  1. Well done. Looks scrumptious. Ours were eaten by pigeons and white fly and then finished off by hale. Will keep trying though.

  2. Wow! Never managed to get even close. Mine were massacred by pigeons too (no netting) so gave up. May try again this year WITH big net or otherwise large brutish canon to blow the pigeons into smithereens - if the net fails, that is. Your Broccoli does look tasty...!

  3. It was my last attempt at growing it, if it had failed that would have been it for me and broccoli - it wasn't worth the stress. I gave up with caulis long ago - far too temperamental for me. I like easy veg to grow.

  5. Loved this post...perhaps there is hope for mine. There's lots of greenery but no purply lovely bits to eat yet.Still , there may be some by the beginning of April when I get back from Australia.

If not, do I just keep growing the greenery in the hope that one day a miracle will happen for me too?
