Artificial grass in winter is often a great alternative for a path too, as it provides a more gripping surface to usual patio slabs, or grass etc, especially in the cold winter weather. It's better than thickly sowing those pesky concrete seeds (which will stop couch grass but not knotweed!). I read, a while back, "organic" advice to hire a rotovator and thoroughly go over the area infested with (shallow-rooted) couch.
