The end of May already! Time is flying even faster than usual at the moment. I have been ridiculously busy but not busy in the garden. I should be busy in the garden but life has been overtaking me and gardening has not really been happening to the extent that is should. It will, there's time (she says, on repeat).
My neighbours, whom I am sure generally consider me to be potty, probably notice my regular checking of the daisy (singular at the moment) in the new front lawn. I seem to have transplanted some clover along with it and that is fine by me. A lawn without daisies is not proper in my world. I keep it watered and whisper words of love to it.This massive annual poppy has appeared in the side front lawn. This lawn was decimated by the digger when the big project happened last year. A combination of grass seed, some offcut rolls of turf from the main lawn and general lawn resilience has seen the lawn bounce back pretty well. Its a little patchy at the moment but that's because its been so dry. This chuffing gurt poppy appeared and I have not the heart to remove it.
This could be a real miracle. This looks like it is going to Susan Williams Ellis. This rose was also pummelled into nothing by the digger and fairly quickly a few leaves reappeared. I assumed that it would be growth from the root stock, but this bud makes me wonder otherwise. I will report back - soon.and I am in a world of hanging basket happiness at the moment. This one by the front door is starting to really flower well. This one by the back door is also doing well. I buy one of those 'buy lots of random annual plugs' offers from Thompson and Morgan and then randomly plant them in hanging baskets and containers. This lack of planning seems to work very well. Well I like the results anyway. The Smell me and Dye Garden needs a good sorting out. It isn't too bad and looks worse than it is as the woad has been blown flat by the recent winds. The roses are doing extremely well. They have had time to put their roots down now.The Courtyard Garden is also looking good. The begonias are mainly getting into their stride now, a couple seem to have suffered whilst overwintering inside, but they are ok.
The aspidistras are enjoying their summer holiday outside and producing new leaves. Few things feel as exciting as new leaves on an aspidistra, they take their time before really getting going.
The formal lawn, the Long Shoot, is looking good with the roses and peonies adding splashes of colour. You can also see colour in the lawn. This is a mix of self-heal, daisies and buttercups. I love flowers in the lawn. It's a good daisy year in the Conservatory border. Some years I edit out too many, some years there are too many, but this is a good year when I have it about right. I am very fond of daisies.I am pretty sure this is a weed but I have let it grow for a couple of years now in the Pond Border. I think it is great so it is not a plant in the wrong place, it is therefore not a weed. The Spring Border is looking floofy and blousy. This is great. If you look too closely you will the stickyweed that is trying to take over. I really do need to get on with some weeding!Tim is keeping me company as I wander. The beech pillars were shortened last year and they have responded well. I am glad they still look good. The Wild Garden is really tall and voluminous this year. It is at its peak lushness! The mulberry tree is covered with pre-mulberries. This is very exciting. I saw it had one or two last year for the first time but this year it has a lot. The trees are really starting to mature now in the garden. I wonder a little if there are too many, some of the garden gets very shady now. But I will see how it goes. The Liriodendrons, the tulip trees, are really getting big. I keep hoping that they will flower 'this yer', but it looks like it might be next year. They do take a while before they flower. The cornus I planted in 2023 after my visit to Cumbria is 'flowering' nicely. and Wild Edric, who had a hard prune last year, is flowering well. The tree ferns are doing well in the Exotic Border and the Abutilon vitifolium, which is such a favourite of mine, are doing well too. There are two in this border and another three elsewhere in the garden. Fabulous shrubs and a couple are getting really quite tall now.I finish as usual at the pond. Big on flag irises, short on water. It has struggled with the recent dry spell and whilst I resist topping the pond up, sometimes it is needed.
I wonder what June will bring to the garden.....
